Among the great music halls of the world, there is one unassuming building that has created quite a name for itself in the breathtaking city of Portland, Maine: the Merrill Auditorium. Constructed in 1912 to take the place of two prior venues that had burned down, this colonial building was originally called the City Hall Auditorium and is still the best representation of Portland’s lively music scene.
The hall has a capacity of 1,900 people and is home to the beautiful and singular Kotzschmar Memorial Organ, a 5,000-pipe instrument that was donated by celebrated newspaperman Cyrus Curtis. In its early days, the auditorium played host to some of the greatest musicians of all time, including George Gershwin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and the La Scala Grand Opera Company. In 1997, a group of various philanthropic organizations and individuals teamed up with the City of Portland to renovate the facility.
The Merrill now boasts top-of-the-line acoustics to go with its historic splendor. Every performance at this venue sounds amazing, with the seating area constructed to optimize sound and stage visibility so that every seat is first-rate. Because of these qualities, the auditorium has attracted a multitude of artists like B.B. King, Ani DiFranco, Jackson Browne, Cake, and a long list of others. In addition to concerts, the venue hosts many theatrical performances, lectures, dances and comedy shows.
With a friendly staff, charming aesthetic and prime location, concert tickets for the Merrill Auditorium naturally sell like hotcakes. Fans love how close the venue is to some of Portland’s best culinary spots, making the options for a pre-show dinner almost too many to choose from. Favorites include Duckfat, which serves delicious New American dishes, J’s Oyster, for the fresh seafood Maine is famous for, and the Green Elephant, for their innovative vegetarian cuisine. One thing is certain: any dish will go with your Merrill Auditorium concert tickets, available at ConcertTickets.com.
