Irving Plaza in New York’s Union Square is one of those venues epitomizing the history that makes this city great. The ballroom interior has three levels and has served a variety of purposes since its construction in 1888, including a Polish-American community center owned by the Polish Army Veterans, between 1948 and 1978, a church service site, and a swing dancing joint. The Plaza launched its infamous rock career in the late seventies with acts like the Ramones and Talking Heads, making it an instant epicenter for punk, new wave and alternative music.
As Dee Dee Ramone once described it, Irving Plaza is “funky without being a dump,” a vibe that still draws musicians like Foo Fighters, Steel Panther, and the B-52’s to its stage. The performance space maintains its unique character with wonderfully preserved details, antique-y balconies and atmospheric lighting. Patrons also appreciate the fully-stocked bar and overall sense of intimacy that remains intact despite the venue’s capacity for sizeable audiences. Best of all, the excellent acoustics play a huge part in making the experience for Irving Plaza concert tickets buyers extremely difficult to beat. An added bonus: the staff here is also widely praised.
Most concert-goers will agree that some of the greatest shows take place at smaller venues with lively backstories and even livelier performers. Irving Plaza is just such a place, and its proximity to so many enticing bars and restaurants is just begging you to make a whole night of it. Grab an Asian fusion dinner at Republic before the show, a craft beer at Heartland Brewery afterwards, and end your night with some of the world’s finest chocolate at Max Brenner, open until 2 A.M. on weekends.
