When one thinks of the performing arts in New York, or indeed in the entire United States, one of the first locales that come up is Carnegie Hall. Commissioned by philanthropic industrialist Andrew Carnegie, the hall resides two blocks away from Central Park and holds about 250 shows a year on its three stages. Since it was built in 1891, nearly every great musical act of the age has performed there, spanning all genres, and its catalogue of live recordings is enormous, driving concert tickets for Carnegie Hall to their highest demand.
Though its name is misleading, Carnegie is composed of three separate halls: the 268-seat Weill Recital Hall, named for the venue’s chairman of the board, the versatile Zankel Hall, which seats 600 and used to be a movie theatre, and the Main Hall, the most esteemed concert hall in the country, which seats 2,804 and whose visually astounding interior has become so famous. In addition to the stunning décor, five levels of tiered seating and immensely high ceilings which combine to make the hall feel like an exquisite musical palace, the acoustics at Carnegie are practically unparalleled.
It is these features that have attracted almost every major figure in music history. The Beatles performed here during their first-ever U.S. tour, and Pink Floyd played the early versions of what would eventually become Dark Side of the Moon, an definitive landmark of music. Perhaps most famously, Judy Garland’s 1961 performance has been called "the greatest night in show business history" and was immortalized in her live record, Judy at Carnegie Hall.
Whatever the source, accolades are in no short supply, and neither are Carnegie Hall concert tickets. This legendary venue has hosted some of the century’s most significant musical moments, and absolutely cannot be missed.
