The storied arena got its start in 1977, opening to the name of Huntington Civic Center and the title of the largest Arena in West Virginia. With a 9,000 person seating capacity and a massive red brick structure, the new multi-purpose event center made a big first impression, as did its 10 million dollar price tag. Early events consisted of basketball games and local talent, as well as a few national acts. Despite its strong beginning, attendance began to wane with the advent of bigger arenas popping up in surrounding West Virginia towns. Luckily, in the 1990s, SMG Property Management acquired the center. With a spirited push towards more sports entertainment and larger musical acts, along with a $3 million building renovation in 1997, the center was able to regain sturdy footing.
Today’s Big Sandy Arena is a venue in its prime. It is a permanent home to the popular sports teams Huntington Blizzard and Huntington Hammer and features numerous other sporting events like WWE fights and monster truck rallies.
