The Assembly Hall in Champaign, Illinois is a large dome-shaped indoor arena which is a part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While the hall mostly hosts collegiate games for both men and women sports, it doubles as a performance and events center. The Assembly Hall first opened in 1963 and continues to garner national attention for its unique shape and construction. At one point in time, it was only one of two edge-supported domes in the United States. The roof is supported by 614 miles of one-quarter inch steel wire wrapped at the base of the dome. The architect behind the masterpiece was Max Abramovitz, an alumnus of the University of Illinois. Each year, thousands purchase concert tickets for Assembly Hall and enjoy the architecture in addition to the concert!
The Assembly Hall has just over 16,000 permanent seats with an official capacity of 16,618. For an in-the-round performance, there is the potential for a 17,200 capacity, depending on how large the stage is. In the past, groups like Phish, Daughtry, Jay-Z, Dave Matthews Band and Deathcab for Cutie have all taken the stage at Assembly Hall. As you can see, all types of genres play the Assembly Hall, and while most are catered to a young adult college-aged crowd, from time to time, adult contemporary acts play the venue as well.
Assembly Hall is the third largest venue in the Illinois arena and continues to be one of the best in the state.
