Boston is home of several top-rated institutions for musical education, including Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory, so it’s no surprise that the scene in this historic city is extremely rich. Birthplace of both the hardcore and ska varieties of punk, this musical nerve center of the East Coast began such bands as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, the Pixies, Aerosmith, and (needless to say) Boston. Music fans from all over the country flock to Beantown, clutching concert tickets for Boston’s many shows.

Nearly as famous as its bands are Boston’s venues. The Orpheum Theatre is one of the oldest in the nation and has hosted pivotal musical events such as Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975 and the recording of the Grateful Dead’s concert in 1973. The building is beautifully historic and located near Boston Common and multiple bars that are perfect to visit before a show. The theatre showcases a myriad of bands from String Cheese Incident to Snow Patrol to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

For a more intimate feel, The Paradise Rock Club in Allston, supports local acts as well as larger national tours. U2’s album Live From Boston 1981 was recorded there, and artists from Snoop Dogg to Of Montreal make their appearances, in addition to lesser known local favorites. The bar is well stocked, and Bostonians recommend stopping by Roast Beast for a delicious pre-show meal.

Music fans with a taste for still more intimate spaces should check out The Middle East, next door to the small rock club T.T. The Bear’s Place. The Middle East was originally a Lebanese restaurant in the 70’s and eventually, through a series of alterations, the building’s basement was converted into a concert venue, while maintaining the restaurant upstairs.
