Jazz is a genre that came into being during the beginning of the 20th century in predominately black communities in the South Eastern corner of the United States.
Created from both African and European musical traditions, Jazz music is most commonly associated with its African roots, due to its usage of blue notes, polyrhythms, improvisation and the swung note. Of all these qualities, improvisation is probably the biggest key element associated with the movement. While Blues music depends heavily on the call and response pattern, Jazz music depends on the musician to interpret a tune in his or her own way. Many claim that Jazz music is the number one ensemble genre of music, because it places a higher value on the artist’s relationship with the other musicians rather than the piece itself.
While the genre has some pretty distinctive characteristics, Jazz has since broken off into several different sub genres in the past century. In the early 1900’s, New Orlean’s Jazz became popular. Soon after, the Jazz Age came to fruition in American History. During the 1920’s, prohibition raged throughout the country. Jazz music was used as a backlash against the law, and it was a device used to deter the older generations from speakeasies. Today, Jazz has broken off into various different subgenres and categories. Each is defined by the region of which it was born, but some are defined by the technique and the variety of instruments used in each piece. While Jazz music may not be heavily distributed in popular music today, many popular artists use Jazz as a springboard for their own music. Artists, such as Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and Mumford and Sons have all been Jazz fans since the beginning of their respective musical careers.
