Indie Rock, or Independent Rock, came into being in both Great Britain and America during the 1980’s. During that era, it was essential to catch the eye of huge, mainstream record labels in order to be signed and have your music distributed. However, bands such as REM and The Smiths took matters into their own hands and signed with relatively low-budget labels. This kind of “do-it-yourself” attitude allowed the musicians to stay true to their own sounds while experimenting with new techniques. In fact, some argue that the diversity of style is what makes Indie Rock such an interesting genre. From Punk Rock, to Jangle Pop, Indie Rock keeps changing and redefining itself with every new artist that breaks into the scene.
The 1990’s saw major changes for this genre due to bands such as Nirvana, Oasis, Green Day, and Pearl Jam gaining worldwide notoriety. Thus, the term “Indie Rock” shifted once again to mean bands that fell under this category and stayed true to their particular style, instead of succumbing to the wants of the mainstream. Today, Indie Rock is reaching a Golden Era with the help of the Internet as a major tool for music promotion. Indeed, Indie Rock has become so much a part of present day musical culture that Pop-Top Forty radio stations find themselves playing more Indie Rock than ever. Furthermore, Indie Rock radio stations are now at the forefront of the airwaves, whereas before they were on the fringe. Likewise, Independent labels are becoming more accessible, and artists are having easier times getting their sounds heard.
