Electronic dance music, or EDM, covers a broad range of music genres that include house, trance, dubstep and techno music. It originated in the 1980’s as raves and warehouse dance parties first became popular. EDM is mainly created for nightclubs and raves and is often recorded specifically to make it easier for DJ’s to transition between songs.
EDM music is characterized by the use of electronic instruments in its production. Artists often use synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines to create dance electronic music, in addition to more traditional instruments and vocals. Differentiation between the sub-genres is determined by how many beats there are per minute. Sub-genres, such as Electronica and House, tend to be more fast paced, while sub-genres, such as dubstep, are generally slower in tempo.
Electronic dance music has reached new heights of popularity in the 21st century, and today songs by EDM artists are often heard on the radio, alongside the biggest pop stars of the moment. Artists, such as Avicii, Tiesto and Kaskade, frequently perform sold out shows worldwide. Many mainstream artists, such as Rihanna and Flo Rida, are collaborating with prominent electronic dance DJ’s to add a modern twist to their pop and hip-hop tunes.
The boom in the popularity of Electronic Dance Music is primarily due to the artists’ action filled performances. When DJ’s play their fast paced, rhythmic music, the crowd can’t help but dance. EDM concerts are not your average concert; they’re more like large dance parties with killer music playing all night long.
