Houston Oilers owner Bud Adams got approval to move the team to Nashville on July 3.
1999
The NFL approved Houston for an expansion franchise after efforts by Los Angeles to land the 32nd team fell short.
2000
Charley Casserly, former General Manager of the Washington Redskins, was hired to head the Houston Texans football operations on January 19.
2000
On March 9, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a new football stadium.

Houston's new football team officially became the Texans on September 6. The other finalists were Apollos and Stallions.
2001
Dom Capers was hired as the team's first coach on January 21. Capers had also served as the first head coach of the Carolina Panthers when they entered the NFL in 1995.

Capers hired former Cleveland Browns head coach Chris Palmer as his offensive coordinator.
