Each video that Duran Duran made was unique. “Girls on Film” which became Duran Durans first Top Ten hit, and “The Chaffeur” caused quite a controversy with their underlying sexual content but their clever videos helped to make Duran Duran’s popularity remarkably swift. “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” were also early videos that were cutting edge for Duran Duran and the newly popular music video television station MTV. Between 1982 and 1984, Duran Duran rose in popularity from an underground British punk band to a punk/pop band with worldwide acclaim. With seemingly constant rotation on MTV of all of their videos, and the stylish production of those videos, “Hungry Like the Wolf” became a Top Ten and “Rio” followed the single into the Top Ten eventually selling over two million copies worldwide.
With the next single “Is There Something I Should Know” reaching the top ten, Duran Duran had their first English No. 1 hit and with that success, Duran Duran released Seven and the Ragged Tiger in time for the 1983 holiday season. Two of the hits that came from that album were the singles “Union of the Snake” and “The Reflex” their first number one US hit. After completing their year and a half long international tour to promote the album, Duran Duran decided to take an extended break.
By 1985, Duran Duran was beginning to loose some of their popularity and in addition, various members of the band decided to move on and leave the band. Some members of Duran Duran went on to form other bands on their own and by late 1986, the once strong Duran Duran was down to just a trio. Even so, Duran Duran recorded their album Nortorious, their first album in three years and although Duran Duran saw it go platinum in the United States, it was less popular that their earlier records. For the rest of the next decade, Duran Duran’s position as a major leader in the music scene continued to decline and by 1988 the album the Big Thing contained the single “I Don’t Want Your Love” which was their last top ten single for five years.
Duran Duran’s album Decade was released late in 1989 and was followed shortly by Liberty the first of Duran Duran’s albums to fail to achieve gold. Then in 1993, Duran Duran had a surprise with the album Duran Duran and the singles “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone”. Both of these singles made it to the top ten in the UK and the album went platinum in the US. This album for Duran Duran restored some of their commercial status and earned them some of the best reviews for an album of their career.
