1970
The Buffalo Braves join the NBA as one of three expansion teams, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers.
1973-74
Under coach Jack Ramsay and NBA scoring leader Bob McAdoo, the Braves top .500 with a 42-40 record. They reach the playoffs for the first time.
1974-75
McAdoo wins the NBA Most Valuable Player Award after claiming his second straight scoring title with a 34.5 PPG average.
1975-76
Buffalo wins its first playoff series, eliminating Philadelphia in the first round. The Braves fall to Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
1978
Boston Celtics owner Irv Levin, seeing an opportunity to put a team in his home state of California, swaps places with Braves owner John Y Brown and takes the club to San Diego. He renames it the Clippers.
1978-79
Lloyd Free averages 28.8 PPG, second in the NBA, in the Clippers' first season in San Diego.
1981
In June, Beverly Hills real estate mogul Donald T Sterling purchases the team.
1984
Los Angeles now has two NBA franchises. The Clippers head north to become the Lakers crosstown rivals. Their first game in the L.A. Sports Arena is a 107-105 win over the New York Knicks.
1985
Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor is hired in April to serve as vice president of basketball operations.
1991-92
For the first time since its Braves days, the Los Angeles Clippers reache the NBA playoffs.
1999
The Los Angeles Clippers move to the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, triggering new club attendance records.
2003-04
Elton Brand and Corey Maggette give the Los Angeles Clippers a rarity: Two 20-plus PPG scorers.
