HOUSTON ROCKETS IMPORTANT DATES & FACTS
1967-68
The expansion San Diego Rockets lose an NBA record 67 games.
1968-89
A rookie Elvin Hayes wins the NBA scoring title.
1971
Recalling the 50,000 Astrodome fans who once saw Hayes battle UCLA, a group from Houston purchases and relocates the team. NBA crowds fall short of expectations.
1974-75
Rudy Tomjanovich and Calvin Murphy lead the team to its first playoff berth since moving to Houston.
1977
On December 9, a fight breaks out. As Tomjanovich runs to the scene, the Lakers' Kermit Washington lands a punch that causes massive jaw, eye and cheek injuries.
1978-79
Moses Malone wins the first of his three MVP Awards.
1980-81
Despite a 40-42 record, the Rockets reach the Finals. Murphy breaks an NBA record by sinking 78 consecutive free throws.
1984
In a draft that also produces Michael Jordan, the Houston Rockets use the top pick on Akeem (later Hakeem) Olajuwon. He joins fellow 7-footer Ralph Sampson to form the "Twin Towers."
1985-86
Like they did five years earlier, the Houston Rockets fall in six games to Boston in the Finals.
1993-84
A Game 7 win over the Knicks gives the Houston Rockets its first title. Olajuwon wins MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. Tomjanovich, in his second full season, is the winning coach.
1994-95
The Houston Rockets acquire Clyde Drexler down the stretch and become the fifth team in NBA history to repeat as champion.
1998-99
Three potential Hall of Famers-Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen-join forces.
2002-03
Yao Ming, the 7-foot-5 rookie from China, makes a worldwide impact, leading All-Star vote-getters.
