1980
Donald J. Carter's dream comes to fruition when Dallas is awarded an NBA franchise. Norm Sonju seNes as president/GM and Dick Motta is the first head coach.
1980-81
The Dallas Mavericks debut. The season highlight is the mid-year signing of guard Brad Davis.
1981-82
The 1981 NBA Draft sets the stage for success. Mark Aguirre (the top pick), Rolando Blackman (ninth) and Jay Vincent (24th) come aboard.
1983-84
Aguirre becomes the first Dallas All-Star and leads the team to its first playoff appearance. The Dallas Mavericks beat Seattle in the first round.
1985-88
One year after getting Sam Perkins in the 1994 NBA Draft, the Dallas Mavericks add more frontcourt talent by drafting Detlef Schrempf and trading for 7-foot-2 James Donaldson.
1986-87
Motta wins his 800th game and coaches the Dallas Mavericks to a 55-27 record. He resigns after a first-round playoff exit.
1987-88
Dallas, coached by John MacLeod, tops 50 wins for the second straight year and makes an inspired playoff run, ousting Houston and Denver before falling to the Lakers in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals.
1991-92
In October 1991, Roy Tarpley is banned from the NBA for his third violation of the substance-abuse policy.
1992-93
The Dallas Mavericks barely avoid the all-time record for futility (9-73) with 11 wins.
1997-98
A.C. Green sets an NBA record by appearing in his 907th consecutive game.
2001-02
Behind the All-Star play of Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, Don Nelson's rejuvenated Dallas Mavericks reach the second round of the playoffs.
