TEXAS RANGERS IMPORTANT DATES & FACTS
1960
With the original Washington Senators scheduled to move to Minnesota in 1961 , the American League awards an expansion franchise to Washington, also to be known as the Senators. General Elwood "Pete" Quesada is the club's first president.
1961
President John F. Kennedy throws out the first ball as the Senators lose their first game to the Chicago White Sox, 4-3, on April 10 at Griffith Stadium. The club finishes ninth that year with 100 losses. A year later, they will move into new D.C. Stadium (renamed Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in 1969).
1969
New Senators owner Bob Short stuns the baseball world by luring Ted Williams out of retirement to serve as the club's manager. Williams' first year is hugely successful as the club wins 86 games for the first winning season in franchise history.
1971
With attendance dropping to 655,000 and the club having failed to ever draw a million in a season, Short receives permission to move the Senators to Texas. The franchise's final game in Washington on September 30 is forfeited to the Yankees when fans storm the field in the ninth inning.
1972
Renamed the Texas Rangers and playing in Arlington Stadium, the club has a rough first year in Texas, losing 100 games and drawing only 663,000 fans. At the end of the season, Williams resigns as manager.
1974
With Billy Martin taking over as manager and outfielder Jeff Burroughs winning the MVP Award, the Texas Rangers win 84 games and finish only five games out of first in the AL West.
1989
Nolan Ryan signs with the Texas Rangers and wins 16 games and the AL strikeout crown at age 42. Ryan will win another strikeout crown, toss two no-hitters and win his 300th game in a Rangers uniform before retiring in 1993 as baseball's all-time strikeout king.
1994
The Texas Rangers move into The Ballpark in Arlington and are leading the AL West (albeit with a losing record) when a strike ends the season in August.
1996
With Juan Gonzalez winning the MVP Award, the Texas Rangers win the AL West for their first division title but are eliminated in the Division Series by the Yankees.
1998-99
Two more West titles and two more MVP Awards to Texas Rangers players (one to Gonzalez, another to Pudge Rodriguez) are followed by two more Division Series losses to the Yankees.
2001
The Texas Rangers make Alex Rodriguez the highest paid player in history when they sign him to a $252-million, 10-year deal.
2001
After trading Rodriguez to the New York Yankees, the Texas Rangers end a streak of last-place finishes and stay in contention until the last week.
