1960
Houston and New York City are awarded National League expansion franchises on October 17, to begin play in 1962.
1962
Houston's club, the Colt .45s, begins play with an 11-2 victory over the Cubs at their temporary home, Colt Stadium, on April 11. The Colt .45s finish their first season under manager Harry Craft in eighth place in the 10-team National League.
1965
Renamed the Astros, the club moves into baseball's first indoor stadium, the Harris County Domed Stadium (aka the Astrodome). Mickey Mantle hits the park's first home run in an exhibition game on April 9. Three days later, the Phillies beat the Astros 2-{) in the first regular-season game
1966
After an unsuccessful attempt to grow grass in their indoor stadium in 1965, the Houston Astros unveil a new artificial surface known as AstroTurf in a 6-3 win over the Phillies on April 18.
1978
J.R. Richard strikes out 303 batters to become the first right-hander in NL history to fan 300 batters in a season.
1980
The Houston Astros win their first division title, topping the Los Angeles Dodgers in a one-game playoff. In an epic LCS in which the final four games go into extra innings, the Astros lose to the Phillies, three games to two.
1981
Nolan Ryan throws his record fifth no-hitter on September 26 and leads the NL in ERA with a 1.69 ERA, as the Houston Astros qualify for the playoffs under the strike year's split-season format. Houston wins the first two games of the best-of-five Division Series with the Dodgers, but then drops the final three games of the series.
1996
Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott pitches a no-hitter on September 25 to clinch the NL West title. Scott wins twice more in the NLCS against the Mets, but the Houston Astros fall in six games, losing the final contest in 16 innings.
1997
The Houston Astros win the first of three NL Central Division titles behind Jeff Bagwell, who hits 43 homers and teals 31 bases, but they are swept by the Braves in the Division Series.
1999
A year after losing to the Padres in a four-game National League Divisional Series, the Houston Astros mark the Astrodome's final season with another Central Division crown, but once more lose the Division Series, with the Braves beating them this time in four games.
2000
The Houston Astros play the 2000 season in their new ballpark, Enron Field, but despite its cozy dimensions and their big bats, the team struggles to a fourth place finish.
2004
A managerial change from Jimmy Williams to Phil Garner spurs a stretch run that gives the Houston Astros the NL wild card.
