Van Halen, the band that hasn’t broken up or gone on any official hiatus’ since their 1972 inception in spite of a multitude of dramatic and highly publicized exits of former members, has sold almost 100 million albums worldwide and has the most hits on the Billboard Mainstream rock chart.
Van Halen released A Different Kind of Truth, their first album in fourteen years, in February of 2012. Although the band is full of controversy and has never strayed far from the public’s eye, they are highly regarded in the music industry as being one of the best-selling groups of all time. According to the Recording Industry of America, Van Halen is the 19th best-selling band/artist of all time, with over 56 million albums sold in the United States alone. They are one of five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than ten million copies in the country, and in 1999 their debut self-titled album was certified diamond, an honor held by few musical groups.
As with most infamous rock bands, Van Halen’s stint as musical artists hasn’t been without controversy. Their 1984 sexually suggestive single “Hot For Teacher” was boycotted and protested by the Parents Resource Center for its lyrics and for the sexually provocative music video featuring an attractive, young teacher stripping in class.
