Tenacious D is an American heavy metal rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1994. Although the group is officially composed of two members (Jack Black and Kyle Glass), they are accompanied by a full band whenever they perform live. The band gradually gained popularity in 1999 when they starred in their own television show and began to support large, nationally touring rock acts. Since then, the band’s popularity has taken off, and each year, thousands of fans purchase concert tickets for Tenacious D.
Their first album, 2001’s self-titled release, was a departure from the band’s more acoustic roots. Although the album didn’t achieve initial success on the charts, it was eventually certified Platinum by the RIAA at the end of 2005. Despite peaking low in the United Kingdom, #38 to be exact, the album sold almost 500,000 copies by the end of 2006 – further proof that the band’s success came later in its career. Their second release, 2006’s The Pick of Destiny, also acted as the soundtrack to their film of the same name. It debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200, with sales being inspired greatly by the popularity of the film.
In addition to being musicians, the members of Tenacious D also take political stances. They are staunch supporters of cannabis legalization and have performed at NORML benefit concerts in the past. They supported John Kerry’s presidency and played a benefit concert for the politician. Their third studio album, Rize of the Fenix, was released in May 2012 after Jack Black admitted he wished to take a year-long break from acting.
