After his work with Genesis, Peter Gabriel went on to a quite successful solo career. His most commercially successful album is his 1986 album So. “Sledgehammer,” the album’s biggest hit, won a record of nine MTV Music Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards. The song is also the most played in the history of the station. Throughout his career, Peter Gabriel has been nominated for many awards. Among those, he’s won three Brit Awards, six Grammy Awards, and thirteen MTV Video Music Awards. BMI honored him at a 2007 awards show, for his “influence on generations of music makers.”
Peter Gabriel has a long withstanding association with Amnesty International and has participated in all 28 of the music events put on by the organization. In 1992, he co-founded WITNESS, a non-profit group that trains small local organizations worldwide, to use the internet and video in human rights documentation and advocacy. His fifteenth album, New Blood, was released in 2011 and it peaked at #30 on the Billboard 200 charts. In November 2011, he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman.
