The group placed third in the reality talent competition the X Factor and was extended a record deal by Simon Cowell as a result. One Direction has been described as sparking the resurgence of the boy band concept. They were a central part of the formation of the new “British Invasion” in the United States, and they have even made appearances on the hit television show iCarly. Their 2011 release, Up All Night, explores themes like heartbreak, empowerment, relationships, and having fun. The group is very popular amongst the tween population and will continue to sell records and break hearts for the remainder of their career. A new album is expected to be released sometime in 2012, although no other details of the album have been released.

Although the artists' career is relatively fresh, One Direction has been nominated for plenty of awards and has earned considerable recognition for their contributions to music.
