The Alberta-born band, Nickelback, knew it was destined for something bigger from its very humble beginnings as the cover band, “Village Idiots.” Borrowing money from a step dad and a name from a monetary transaction (“Here’s your nickel back”), Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger and Brandon Kroeger set out to make a memorable studio debut in 1996. Their goal: to turn Nickelback concert tickets into a valuable commodity. The result was the 7 song EP Hesher, which led to the full length album Curb. The albums and their shared single “Fly” worked perfectly and landed the group a record deal with Roadrunner Records and EMI Canada.
After signing, the hits just kept on coming for the musical act, whose mixture of grungy alternative rock sound and edgy subject matter resonated deeply with their fans. The year 2001 brought their first chart-topping single, the melodramatic and catchy, “How You Remind Me,” which was the number one single of the year on the Billboard Hot 100. Nickelback immediately followed with 2003’s “The Long Road.” A certified mega-hit, “The Long Road” went triple platinum by March 2005.
In 2005, the band released the album “All the Right Reasons,” which cemented the group’s legendary rock status and made history, by landing 5 singles on the Contemporary hit radio charts. The album, which sold 60,000 copies in its first week, also netted Best Rock Album awards at both the Billboard Music awards and Juno awards that year. Nickelback rode the success around the world, selling 2 million tickets for packed shows and playing with other headliners, like Bon Jovi. The live performances got stellar reviews, and the boys were praised for their electric and passionate stage presence.
