Lynyrd Skynyrd, the classic rock band that formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964, has gained worldwide recognition as the group behind the hit-single, and somewhat of a pop-culture phenomena “Free Bird.” At the peak of the band’s success, three members of the group died in a plane crash in 1977, putting an abrupt end to the band. Since then, the group has reformed, once in 1979, for a reunion tour, and again in 1987.  Thousands of fans purchase concert tickets for Lynyrd Skynyrd each year in the hopes of hearing the band playing the fourteen minute long song “Free Bird” during the band’s finale.

A version of the original band still tours to this day. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, after being nominated for the position seven times. The band has released nineteen albums, with three being awarded multi-platinum honors, and three reaching Gold. Many, confused by their name, recognized it as a misspelling of somebody’s name, which it was. Lynyrd Skynyrd named the band after one of their high-school basketball coaches, Leonard Skinner, who consistently complained about the band members’ hair length.

Rolling Stone ranked the band #95 on their list of the Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004. In September 2010, the group was named #77 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list. Guitar World named the guitar solo in “Free Bird” as the third greatest guitar solo ever in 2008.
