Pop legend Lionel Richie has been selling out stadiums for the bulk of his career, and with this much musical flair, it’s no surprise. Known primarily for his singing voice and songwriting abilities, this titan of the entertainment industry is also a pianist, saxophonist, producer, and actor. Richie boasts a decades-long career that few could carry so outstandingly.
Richie is a native of Tuskegee, Alabama, and although he earned a tennis scholarship to Tuskegee Institute, the tennis star spent all his of free time performing with different R&B groups as a creative outlet for his love of singing. In 1968, Richie’s talent was realized when he joined the popular soul group, the Commodores, as singer and sax player. The band met with immense success while opening for The Jackson 5 and produced several funky classics that are still played on dance floors all over the world to this day, including “Nightshift” and the notorious booty-shaker “Brick House.”
During his time with the Commodores, Richie began writing commissioned songs for other performers and collaborating with the likes of Kenny Rogers and Diana Ross. In 1982, he finally launched his solo career with a self-titled debut. The album immediately shot up the charts, making Richie an instant American figurehead of pop music. His widespread veneration hasn’t wavered since, and after thirty years, twenty albums, two Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Oscar, Lionel Richie concert tickets are still selling as strong as they were back in the heyday of R&B.
Richie has collaborated with some of modern music’s best and brightest in addition to writing and recording some of the century’s most recognized songs, including “Hello,” “Endless Love,” and “Dancing on the Ceiling.” This performer is the definition of stardom, and his live shows are a must-see spectacle.
