Famous for his gritty soulful voice, as well as his spastic arm gestures while performing, Joe Cocker’s voice and persona have been dear parts of pop culture for more than 40 years. Heavily influenced by Ray Charles and Lonnie Donegan, Cocker started singing in public at the tender age of 12, when his older brother invited him onstage with his jazz-blues group. Young Cocker soon became famous for his performance in his hometown of West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1960, Cocker formed his first band called The Cavaliers.
While the Cavaliers quickly disbanded, Joe Cocker continued to pursue a career in music and performed in pubs around Shefflield. In 1966, Cocker teamed up with Chris Stainton to form The Grease Band and set up shop in London, England. Soon after The Grease Band formed, Cocker composed his genius rearrangement of “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which many years later became widely recognized as the opening credit song for the hit TV show, The Wonder Years.
Joe Cocker and The Grease Band made an appearance at the first Woodstock Festival in 1969. So impressed with his performance and his cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” George Harrison from The Beatles decided to give Cocker the permission to cover “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window,” and “Something.” These covers lead to Cocker’s series of performances on Late Night with Ed Sullivan and other famous late night variety shows.
While the 1970’s proved to be a very tumultuous decade for him, Cocker made a comeback in the 1980’s with a duet with Jennifer Warnes for the song “Up Where We Belong.” The sound was featured in the hit film An Officer and a Gentleman and won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo. Today, Joe Cocker travels with his band internationally and performs for huge audiences in famous venues. Concert tickets for Joe Cocker are never cheap, so be sure to book yours well in advance!
