Green Day is an American punk alternative band from East Bay, California. The band formed in 1987 and has maintained the same lineup since 1990.Before releasing their highly successful major label debut, Dookie, in 1994, the group was part of the Berkley area punk scene, where they built a grassroots fan base. Since the release of Dookie, and perhaps even in Green Day’s early years, they grew accustomed to playing venues packed with fans who purchased their concert tickets for Green Day well in advance.
Upon the release of Dookie, Green Day was accredited alongside other punk bands, Rancid, Sublime and The Offspring, for reviving punk music. The album was recorded in just three weeks and was widely considered to be a commercial success. After a brief hiatus in 1997, Green Day re-formed and released their second album Insomniac. Though the album did peak at number two on the American charts and reached platinum status, it was not as popular or commercially successful as its predecessor. Green Day’s next two releases also did not match the popularity of their major label debut. It wasn’t until the release of 2004’s American Idiot that Green Day matched (and exceeded!) the popularity of that album. American Idiot charted in 27 countries, peaked at number one in 19 of them, sold 14 million copies worldwide, and won a number of awards, including a Grammy. The album has since been turned into the Broadway musical, American Idiot. Their most recent album, 21st Century Breakdown, also garnered the group a Grammy and was a commercial success.
