The band saw a surge of popularity during the 1960s, when they were led by Peter Green, and they released their hit-single “Albatross,” a guitar-based instrumental. The band once again felt an increase in popularity that spanned from 1975-1987, when the combined force of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, and Christine McVie made up the core of the band. Rumours, The second album released by Fleetwood Mac in 1977, after the addition of Nicks and Buckingham, spawned four top ten singles and remained at the number one spot on the American charts for 31 weeks. The album alone has sold over 40 million copies, making it the eighth highest grossing album of all time.

Since 1967, the band has released seventeen studio albums, twelve compilation albums, 69 singles, and twelve music videos. The only original member in the band is drummer Mick Fleetwood. Six of the group’s songs were featured on an episode of the Fox show Glee, which sparked a renewed interest in the band; it re-entered the Billboard 200 chart at #11 shortly after the episode aired.

In an interview in May 2011, Stevie Nicks announced that the band would go on tour in 2012, and there is a possibility of a new album.
