            Only one band can boast a forty-four-year career, record sales of over 100 million, and the Guinness Book of World Records award for “loudest pop group.” This group, of course, is Deep Purple. The influential British band formed in 1968 and quickly became known for their fresh approach to the heavy metal rock genre. Although the band’s lineup is as consistently changing as the drummer for Spinal Tap, their awesome sound has remained true to what fans love about them, keeping Deep Purple concert tickets in constant flow.

            In the very beginning, the original band members (Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Nick Simper, Ian Paice, and Rod Evans) resided at Deeves Hall in Hertfordshire and would write and practice at the house, which was set up with the latest and best musical gear. The quintet’s first European tour was played under the name of Roundabout, but the members eventually agreed to rechristen themselves Deep Purple after the hit tune by Peter DeRose (Blackmore’s grandmother’s favorite song).

            The band’s debut album, Shades of Deep Purple, was released that very first year and earned them instant global fame, particularly with the cover of “Hush” by Joe South, which made it to Billboard’s number four within six months. The original lineup released two more albums and a famous single before the seventies had even rolled around.  With this notoriety, the band wasn’t afraid to start experimenting with a wider range of string and woodwind instruments and incorporating more classical sounds.

            Deep Purple has since recorded and toured almost nonstop, apart from an eight-year break beginning in 1976. Although the band members have changed around, Deep Purple remains one of the leading acts in heavy metal and hard rock, and they have indeed earned their household name status.
