A progressive jazz combo with bluegrass undertones, the band was founded in 1988 by its namesake Béla Fleck, one of the world’s most celebrated banjo players. The artists' biggest claim to fame is their openness to new influences and willingness to incorporate a variety of instruments and sounds into their music. These styles include country twang, gospel, spoken word, and even traditional African implements. The original core lineup, aside from Béla’s banjo, consisted of Victor Wooten on bass, his brother Roy “Future Man” Wooten on percussion, and Howard Levy on harmonica and keyboard. From the album Left of Cool onward, Levy was replaced by sax player Jeff Coffin.
The Flecktones have received abundant accolades from the music community for their inventive creations. Outbound, The Hidden Land, their 2008 Christmas album (Jingle All the Way), and the band’s self-titled debut all won Grammy Awards either collectively or for particular tracks. To this day, their innovations continue to wow fans and convert new listeners.
Apart from a year-long hiatus in 2005, the Flecktones have been touring ceaselessly since their debut.
