Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli was born in Tuscany and began his musical education at a young age, quickly becoming an astounding multi-instrumentalist. Though he suffered from poor eyesight and eventual blindness, the classical star would let no physical hindrance stand in his way. Bocelli kicked off his career by winning the Newcomers’ section of the Sanremo Festival in 1994 with a soulful rendition of “Il mare calmo della sera” by Zucchero. After accompanying Italian rock artist Zucchero on tour, he made his classical debut within Northern Italy; his first album, Il mare calmo della sera, dropped immediately after and went platinum mere weeks later. In May, he sang a duet with Luciano Pavarotti at the legendary singer’s Charity Gala event, and Italy saw a rise in sales for Andrea Bocelli concert tickets.
The tenor made his opera debut in September, playing Macduff in Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth, and a few short months later was serenading Pope John Paul II at Christmas in Rome. When Bocelli released his self-titled album in 1995, the opening track, “Con te partirò,” became a monumental success in Belgium, outselling every single in history and launching Bocelli’s worldwide takeover. During the next three years, he would perform with a myriad of artists, including Sarah Brightman, with whom he re-recorded “Con te partirò” as “Time to Say Goodbye,” which debuted at number one on the German charts, where it would stay for fourteen straight weeks with sales at almost three million.
Bocelli has since returned to the recording studio and the opera stage to perform for sold-out theatres all over the world, expanding his audience into the U.S. and beyond. He has exhibited his immense lung power before heads of state, popes, Queen Elizabeth II, and Grammy audiences who watched him receive countless music awards and nominations.
